shoot the moon...

There is a full moon tonight. Did you know it is a "blue moon"? There are actually two definitions of a blue moon. The more modern definition is the second full moon that occurs during a month. The Farmers' Almanac definition is an extra full moon that occurs during a season. One season normally has three full moons. If a season has four, the third full moon of that season is considered a blue moon. For 2010, the time between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice, will have four full moons. Tonight's is the third so it is called a blue moon.

If you are interested in learning more about photographing the moon, I was a guest writer with the Mortal Muses. You can find my article here.

Even if you don't plan to photograph the moon, take a step outside tonight to enjoy the view. It never gets old.

Hello Barbara,
I just came back from the Mortal Muses blog. Your photos are so great. You are really an artist in taking photos. The moon is always amazing, isn't it. I love when one can see the mountains on it. It remind me always to the tale, that the moon has a face and is smiling. Sometimes I see the face and who knows what he is thinking.
Greetings, Johanna

Love your post! Beautiful photo and information. Now I understand the expression "Once in blue moon". I caught just a very quick glimpse of the moon yesterday morning while driving to work at 5am and it was huge and orange and then I lost it behind buildings again. So are so fortunate to not have your views obscured by city buildings because it's always prettiest when it's low in the sky. Thanks for the tips.

I love this post and all of the information. I, too, love seeing the moon in the morning, even if it is just a wisp. It's really amazing! And so are your pictures!

Happy Weekend!

Jane

Beautiful. I got really behind in my blog reading this month. I'm finally caught up with card blogs and friends, but photography is still loaded up. I'm off to see your post on Mortal Muses which is one of my favorite blogs.

I just popped over to see your moon shots which are stunning! I'm afraid I'm an automatic setting girl, but maybe following your tutorial I can step outside of my comfort zone :-)

The moon last night at our house was so lovely (and so large!!) But, although I have a love of photography, I have grown very lazy over the years. Your photos are beautiful and make me want to pick up my camera again :)

Thanks for visiting my blog and have a wonderful holiday :)

I just had to stop by and tell you that the moon over the praying monk is a moon I admired for many nights growing up in the shadow of Camelback. Beautiful shot!
Visiting via Tablescape Thursday.
Best,
Lisa

Just catching up on your blog and saw this post. I tried and tried to capture that moon (didn't know it was blue, just that it was full, and that was interesting info). Well, let's just say I wasn't that successful, so I'm going to head over to Mortal Muses and see if I can do a better job next time. Thanks for the tips.
